Excalibur Builders constructs the highest rated Green Built Home of the Year!
(Slinger, WI) -- Green Built Home, a national award-winning program of Wisconsin Environmental Initiative (WEI), is proud to announce that certification has been completed for the highest rated Green Built Home of the year! The home built by Excalibur Builders of Slinger, far exceeds the program's sustainable building and energy efficient standards. "Not only is this one of the few homes we've certified in the area," says Nathan Engstrom, Green Built Home program Director, "this is the highest performing home we've certified anywhere in the state in 2006!"
Excalibur Builders, owned by David and Carol Hamilton, started their first Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) house in 2001 and won the Wisconsin Ready Mix Residential Above Grade Concrete Design award in 2002. Excalibur's goal is to construct 100% of their homes to meet or exceed Green Built Home and Wisconsin Energy Star Homes certification requirements. "The use of Insulating Concrete Forms for the exterior walls makes it easier to comply with the strict standards and requirements needed to achieve Green Built and Energy Star Status." says Dave Hamilton. "We believe the future of Residential construction will be Green Built, Energy Star Homes."
The three bedroom home is located at 718 Forest View Road in the Town of Kewaskum. Excalibur used environmentally friendly materials such as recycled content wood/plastic composite decking, recycled content carpeting and high efficient mechanical equipment and appliances. Landscaping on the site takes full advantage of native plants, no-mow grasses, and a pond to help conserve and restore 9 of the 11acres in an undisturbed, natural condition. All insulation used is formaldehyde-free and non-toxic. ENERGY STAR qualified lighting fixtures with high efficiency fluorescent guidelines, it is estimated that the homeowners will save 25% or more on their heating and cooling bills.
Additionally, the home utilizes innovative Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) wall construction and an insulated concrete roof. The durable and energy and resource efficient concrete construction allowed this home to meet the Institute for Business and Home Safety "Fortified Home" standards as well, making this project the first Green Built, ENERGY STAR, Fortified Home built in the state of Wisconsin.
To receive Green Built certification a home must earn at least 60 points from the Green Built Home Checklist, one of the most comprehensive green building rating tools in the country. This home scored 163 points, almost three times the number needed for certification. "Green building is gaining acceptance rapidly across Wisconsin and around the world," says Nathen Engstrom, Green Built Home Program Director. "Green Building is coming to be understood simply as good building and offers homeowners benefits such as reduced energy and maintenance costs. These days, everybody wants that."
